Privacy Policy

This privacy policy has been updated to include the new standards of the European data protection law known as the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which came into effect on 25th May 2018. This new version explains what data we collect, why we collect it and for how long we retain it.

Cookies

Cookies are tiny files that are downloaded to your computer when you visit a website. The majority of websites these days use cookies to help improve the user-experience of visitors. Cookies are used on our website as follows:

Comments: If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. We also collect the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. These cookies will last for one year.

An anonymized string created from your email address may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Gravatar – Privacy Policy

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

Google Analytics: This site uses Google Analytics which is one of the most widespread and trusted analytics solution on the web for helping us to understand how visitors use the site and ways that we can improve your experience. These cookies may track things such as how long you spend on the site and the pages that you visit so we can continue to produce engaging content. The user and event data retention period in our account is set to 14 months which allows us to compare year on year traffic data.

Google Adsense: The Google AdSense service which we use to serve ads is set to show only non-personalised ads to users in the European Economic Area (EEA). This which means that they are targeted using contextual information rather than the past behaviour of a user. Although these ads don’t use cookies for ads personalisation, they do use cookies to allow for frequency capping, aggregated ad reporting and to combat fraud and abuse.

Social Media: We use social media buttons and/or plugins on this site which allow you to connect with your favourite social networks. For these to work the social media sites themselves (including Facebook and Twitter) will set cookies on our site which may be used to enhance your profile on their site or contribute to the data they hold for various purposes outlined in their respective privacy policies:

Facebook – Privacy Policy
Twitter – Privacy Policy

Disabling Cookies: If you are not sure whether or not you need cookies, it is recommended that you do not disable them so as not to affect the functionality of websites. You can, however, prevent the setting of cookies by adjusting the settings on your browser or you can take a look at the About Cookies website which offers guidance for all modern browsers.
